GE Energy Services acquire EER Contributed by Peter Roberts IJmuiden, NL, 19th July, 1999 - Ref.: 9907art1 On Wednesday 14th July General Electric Energy Services announced their acquisition of American Flame member, Energy and Environment Corporation EER. To many present and former IFRF staff members at IJmuiden, EER was well known through former IJmuiden Investigators Mike Heap and Roy Payne and Former IFRF Panel Chairman, Tom Tyson. The following is taken from the GE Energy Services Press Release. GE ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION ATLANTA, GA (July 14, 1999) GE on wednesday 14th announced it has acquired Energy and Environmental Research Corporation (EER) of Irvine, CA. EER will become part of GE Energy Services, based in Atlanta. Formed in 1977, EER is a leader in the development and application of advanced nitrogen oxide (NOx) control technologies. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. Utilizing a system engineering approach, EER offers integrated control technologies which minimize the cost of meeting complex NOx control requirements. The company specializes in combustion modifications integrated with selective catalytic and non-catalytic post combustion control technologies. EERs combustion modification technologies incorporate fuel and combustion air staging through the companys low NOx burners, overfire air systems, and reburning technologies. The company is ranked among the ten largest source-testing firms in North America. This is the latest in a series of acquisitions for GE Energy Services, which continues to expand its portfolio of service solutions for the global power industry. "EER complements GEs current ability to provide emission-reducing, gas turbine combustion system modifications with our Dry Low NOx technology. With EERs technology, we now also can reduce emissions from fossil fuel-fired boilers, further increasing our ability to serve customers facing stricter emissions regulations," said Ricardo Artigas, President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Energy Services. This acquisition also complements GEs investment in Praxis Engineers, Inc. of Milpitas, CA, a company that provides software solutions to improve the performance of coal-fired steam power plants. Thomas Tyson, Chief Executive Officer of EER, added, "This acquisition opens up substantial opportunities to offer EERs clean air technologies to the power plant industry, furthering GEs goals of providing a full range of emission-reduction services to its utility and industrial clients." With four principal offices and test facilities in the U.S. and Canada including a 25-acre research and development laboratory capable of testing full-sized utility burners, EER provides combustion optimization tuning and specialized emissions measurements, in addition to services and control systems covering the full spectrum of emissions related to photochemical smog, acid rain, air toxics and greenhouse gases. The company also provides services and advanced technology for a broad range of waste related issues, including prevention and minimization of waste materials, thermal treatment, and the recovery of energy and material resources. In the power systems engineering area, EERs services and technologies encompass fuels engineering, design and construction management of special purpose boilers and furnaces, and special purpose instrumentation and controls.
