Clean Air V
To start this week’s article, we must congratulate the organisers of the 5th International Conference "Technologies and Combustion for a Clean Environment", which took place in Lisbon, Portugal last week starting on Sunday 12th with technical session days from Monday through Thursday 15th July. The main organisers of the "Clean Air" conferences are Professors Maria Da Graça Carvalho of Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and Fred Lockwood of Imperial College London. As usual a packed programme both technical and social was provided for the delegates, which due to the very efficient local organisation, worked like "clockwork". There were over 350 delegates present many of whom were part of the international combustion community. Looking forward to the next one in two years time.

Integration of TOTeM14 and the Swedish-Finnish Flame-Day
In the last weeks we have been reviewing the relationship between TOTeM14 and the Swedish-Finnish Flame-day. It was becoming clear that not only was there the intentional relationship between the meetings – same place-consecutive days – but also there a clear relationship between the programme development, namely a strong emphasis on biomass/biofuels. Originally the Flame Days were to have a broader remit, but in the event the main emphasis of the papers offered were upon biomass and related subjects such as fixed and fluidised bed combustion.

So after a meeting of the Organising Committee, we decided to integrate the Meetings completely, as follows:

Combined TOTeM 14 and Swedish-Finnish Flame-Day,
Växjö - Sweden

"State of the art in Combustion Technology
in the Nordic Region"
"Bio-fuels Fuel preparation, combustion technologies
and scope for utilisation"
28th (Evening) - 30th September, 1999

This integration has a number of important consequences:

  • Flame Days are open to IFRF Members and to those who are not members, but have an interest in the work of the National Committees, the Foundation and the programme. Thus they are essentially open conferences.
  • TOTeMs on the other hand are intended for IFRF Members only. Furthermore they are intended not as a conference so much as a determination of the state-of-the-art, through the invitation of experts in the field to make keynote presentations on the subject in hand.
  • For this meeting we have the "best of both worlds". Participants are welcome to join both phases of the joint meeting whether they are formally members of the IFRF or not. The IFRF recognises that in this rapidly developing area of Biofuels, if we are to present our members with a balanced and accurate view of the state of development, we would be advised to broaden the contributing base as widely as possible. This opinion is shared by the organisers of the Flame Days.

Thus the Joint Programme, both technical and social is published on the web today along with details of how to register for the meetings, how to propose poster presentations and how to book hotel rooms.
