American Flame Member, Weyerhaeuser, the US paper and wood products group, "surprised the North American forestry industry yesterday with a friendly takeover of Canada's MacMillan Bloedel for US$2.45bn in stock" reported Scott Morrison in last Tuesday’s [22nd June 1999] British Financial Times.

"The takeover of one of Canada's most prominent corporate names would be the latest in a series of cross-border mergers and acquisitions by North American forest products groups responding to a global consolidation wave led by Scandinavian producers.

Already the world's largest producer of softwood lumber and market pulp, Weyerhaeuser would become one of the top three makers of packaging products. The acquisition would boost its annual sales to about US$13.3bn. Through the merger, Weyerhaeuser would acquire 16 mills and 13 distribution centres in Canada and the US."

Weyerhauser is a long time member of American Flame and was well known at IJmuiden in the Mid-1980’s with their R&D collaboration in the development of powdered wood burners for application in the pulp and paper industry.
