Annual EuroFlam Seminar "Best yet" Contributed by Peter Roberts Cardiff, Wales, 25th June, 1999 - Ref.: 9906art21Last week on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th June, the 6th Annual EuroFlam Seminar was organised at Cardiff University. Visiting investigators from the three EuroFlam members, ENEL SPI, IFRF and Cardiff University, met together during the two days to present their reports on the projects that they had carried out during the previous year. This group was augmented by a small number of visiting investigators, who are presently in residence and have carried out a substantial part of their project.
The EuroFlam (http://www.euroflam.net/index.html) programme is mainly concerned with the provision of a service to the European Energy Community, which may be characterised by "training through participation in research. Typically Visiting Investigators have access to one of the three participating laboratories for periods typically of six months. The European Commission supports the programme through the DG12 Training and Mobility of researchers programme. Each year the Visiting Investigators from the three laboratories come together for the Annual Seminar. The Visiting Investigators - EuroFlam 1998/1999 Those who presented are listed below: ENEL, SPI Pisa, Italy IFRF Research Station,
IJmuiden, The Netherlands Cardiff University, Wales Thus seven European countries were represented. The number of girls participating, has always been a strong characteristic of the EuroFlam programme. This year was no exception with ladies providing almost 40% of the participants. The Programme The research results presented covered a full range of subjects from basic research on coal combustion, analysis of liquid fuel sprays, excess enthalpy combustion through various mathematical modelling developments and applications to the development of innovative methods of 3D data presentation. Full details of the programme will be published in the MNM next week along with abstracts of the presentations. The presentations were assessed formally by the Industrial and Academic successors, respectively Professor Klaus Hein of TU Stuttgart, Germany and Dr Ambrogio Milani of CSM, Italy, and informally through active discussions following each presentation, extending through to the breaks. It was particularly noted that the quality of the presentations were higher than even, helped very much by the high standard of visual aids used. The Air Products "Best Presentation" Award In the past we have had the support of industry in terms participation of industrial IFRF Member Organisations at the seminars. This year for the first time we had support in terms of prize offered by British Flame Member Air Products. Roger Dudill, Air Products (http://www.airproducts.com) Main Contact Person in the UK, attended the technical sessions and based on the advice of the two assessors made the choice of the Best Presentation.
But in the final analysis, the excellence of the presentation given by Elisabetta Carrea, the IFRF Graduate from the University of PISA, of on the subject "The role of char surface structure development in pulverised fuel combustion." edged her in front of the of her colleagues. This proved to be a very popular decision, loudly applauded by her peers. Social Programme The Conference dinner was held in the University on Wednesday evening. This meal was relatively informal At the end of the evening, the Certificates of Completion were presented by Roger Dudill. But like all successful conferences, the real social programme extended well beyond the "organised" section! Associated Management and Quality Control Meetings The summer 1999 management meeting was held in parallel with the Visiting Investigator Round Table. Both contain a strong element of quality assurance. The round table meeting majors on this issue from the client point of view with a full report fed back to the Management Group. The Conclusions Dr Tony Griffiths Programme Manager at Cardiff, chaired the final session and took the opportunity to sum up the activities and achievement of the 1998/1999 EuroFlam year. He briefly reviewed the breadth of scope embodied in the presentations, and congratulated the participants on their grasp of the complex issues under consideration. He went further to remind them of the tasks that lay ahead of them, particularly those that would remain working in fields relating to combustion. He predicted that the Kyoto protocol and the need to provide innovative, cheap and effective heating processes technology for the control of carbon dioxide emissions would drive their work. In short Carbon Dioxide Control would form the basis of Combustion Engineering of the new millennium. The EuroFlam Consortium Chairman, Peter Roberts, IFRF NET, noted the need for the class of 98/99 to maintain contact with each other. To aid this in the short term, he announced that all participants would be added to the IFRF International Combustion Community subscribers list. Those who were in residence at any of the three EuroFlam laboratories or who were working with an IFRF Member Organisation would be proposed for authentication as a Registered Individual Member. In the longer term it would depend on the future of the EuroFlam programme, which is dependent in its present form, on continued EC support. Thus the results of funding acquisition within Framework Programme 5 are of considerable importance. In any event the Staff at Cardiff must be congratulated for the fine organisation.
