The 8th Annual EuroFlam seminar was hosted by the Cardiff University, Division of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Studies, on Thursday and Friday of last week 21st and 22nd June 2001. Visiting Investigators from all three EuroFlam Partner Laboratories – Cardiff University, Wales, IFRF at IJmuiden, The Netherlands and the Pisa Laboratories of ENEL, Italy, including all those who had completed their access periods since June last year, gathered at Cardiff, along with staff of the three facilities and the Academic and Industrial Assessors.

Fine summer weather helped the participants (Group photo) to achieve their main objectives, namely for the visiting Investigators from the three facilities to get to know each other and to present details of their work to their colleagues and the assessors.

The “networking” commenced with an informal dinner of Wednesday evening and at 09.00 on Thursday morning, the Technical Sessions commenced and continued, with a break for the Visiting Investigators Round Table and the EuroFlam Management meetings, to midday Friday. The programme is given below. Summaries of all presentations will be published in the IFRF MNM over the next weeks. These summaries will also be archived on the EuroFlam Website – http://www.euroflam.net

The Academic and Industrial assessors, Prof. Klaus Hein and Dr. Ambrogio Milani, respectively reported that the general quality of the presentations was high, and that the subject matter was pertinent to the contemporary primary energy conversion problems – clean conversion with increased efficiency to alleviate carbon dioxide emissions.

The Seminar Dinner was held in Cardiff Castle on Thursday evening. There were many guests from former EuroFlam graduates, members the local industrial community, from Member Organisations of British Flame and further a field. The full seminar was attended, for example, by Michael Lykke Heiredal, a CFD specialist from FLS miljø a/s of Denmark. The beautiful accompaniment of Welsh music and songs early in the evening broadened to a more international repertoire later in the evening with a trend towards Jazz and Blues – in all ways it complemented the atmosphere of the evening.

The Chairman of the Management Committee introduced the presentation of the Certificates of Completion noting that the EuroFlam had successfully opened the doors of Energy Conversion Science and Technology to women to the extent that the number of young women receiving their certificates equalled the number of men. This was truly a milestone, well reflecting the ambition of the European Commission, which funds the programme.

This was also reflected by the fact that Marzia Taddei was judged to the winner of the Best Presentation award – presented this year by Air Products, a Member Organisation of British Flame. (Photo – Marcia with Prof. Hein and Dr Milani).

The team at Cardiff did an excellent job in the organisation of the 2001 Seminar and should be congratulated by all.
