IJmuiden, NL, 23rd June 2000

The EuroFlam Consortium held its Annual Seminar and Summer Management Meeting at Florence Italy on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd June, last week.

A special meeting of the Italian Committee of the IFRF preceded the EuroFlam meeting. This was hosted on the afternoon of Tuesday 20th June by ENEL Produzione-Ricerca at their laboratories in Pisa and was concerned with the subject of:

"Companies and professional skill in European education
The Combustion Technologies"

The Italian Committee Chairman, Ing. Giuseppe Girardi (photo), opened the meeting a which commenced with a history of the EuroFlam programme presented by the EuroFlam Chairman, followed by presentations from Elisabetta Carrea, Caroline Syred and Christian Skaug in which these EuroFlam programme participants, respectively representing the IFRF, Cardiff University and ENEL, informed the meeting of how they had been attracted to the Programme, what they had achieved, and in the case of Elisebetta Carrea, how the experience had been of value after she had completed her training and research periods at IJmuiden.

After discussing this programme, the Meeting heard presentations from:

Ing. G. Marenco (ENEA) - Education and Training
Prof. A. Cavaliere (Università di Napoli) - To Train and to Entertain in High Level Education
Prof. A. Scozzafava (EU Delegate UE - Università di Firenze) - Potential of Education and Training through the Action "To Increase the Human Potential of Research" of the 5th FP
Ing. A. Castiglioni (Techint) - The Programme of Dalmine and Politecnico of Milan for the Excellence in Iron and Steel Industry (Presented by Ing Carlo Raggio)
Ing. G. De Michele (ENEL Produzione-Ricerca) - The R&TD Strategies of ENEL Produzione (Presented by Ing. Mario Graziadio)

The information presented and the considerable discussion, which ensued, confirmed the growing importance of Combustion Education and Training for Industry and the importance of the EuroFlam3 programme and the coming EuroFlam - Marie Curie Training Site programme within this field. Thus the scene was set by the Italian Committee for the Annual Seminar of EuroFlam in Florence.

The Annual Seminar (Group, photo) was attended by 12 Graduates/Visiting Investigators who presented their completed reports or progress reports. Abstracts of these presentations will be presented in a Monday Night Mail series, during the summer. The meeting was also attended by the EuroFlam Management Committee augmented with a larger group of staff members from Cardiff.

The quality of presentations was generally of a high order and some interesting work was presented. The Academic and Industrial assessors, Prof. Hein and Dott. Ing Milani commented on the increasingly good quality. All of those who had completed their training/research period graduated and received their certificates of completion. The remaining speakers were assessed and will receive their certificates in due course.

This year the Best Presentation award (Certificate plus a cheque for €150), was given by the Italian Committee for Flame Research. Dr Giuliano Trebbi former Chairman of the Italian Committee attended the Thursday morning session and presented the award to Christian Skaug of Norway for his presentation "Large Eddy Simulation using G-Equations".
