Last week, between 19th and 21st June, the IFRF were the hosts for the 9th Annual International EuroFlam Seminar, which was held at Wijk aan Zee, a village on the North Sea coast of the Netherlands. Wijk aan Zee is situated just to the north of Corus IJmuiden, the iron and steel works in which the IFRF Research Station and the Communications Centre are based.

The seminar was held at the Residentie Zeeduin, the atmosphere of which, according to the participants, allowed a very relaxed and pleasant meeting. Our thanks are due to Maria Buur for the local organisation.

The Seminar programme was organised by Stanley Santos. It was attended by all Visiting Investigators who have had EC funded access to the EuroFlam Consortium’s Large Scale Combustion Research Infrastructures at Cardiff University, UK, IFRF IJmuiden, Netherlands and ENEL Produzione, Pisa Italy along with the Facility management staff of the three infrastructures and the programme’s Academic and Industrial assessors [Photograph: Participants at 9th EuroFlam Seminar].

All in all there were 14 presentations made. The two Assessors, Professor Klaus Hein, of IVD, TU Stuttgart, Germany and Dr Ambrogio Milani of ENEA, Italy agreed that the preparation and presentation of the projects, as well as the technical content of the work, continued to improve.

As in previous years, the presentations were also assessed from the point of view of the Award for the best presentation. This year the award was sponsored by Dutch Flame, that section of IFRF NET, which is based in the Netherlands, and comprised a Best presentation Certificate plus €150. The winner was Martin Dressler for his presentation; “Analysis of burning/devolatilisation behaviour of waste derived fuels” based on the work undertaken whilst he had access to the large-scale combustion research infrastructure at Cardiff University [Photograph – Martin Dressler received his Best Presentation Award from Professor Hein].

In addition to the technical programme, the participants attended:

  • A Round Table at which they could discuss the success of the programme during the last year and offer the management Committee advice as to how the programme could be improved.
  • A visit to a range of steel producing facilities within CORUS including basic oxygen steel-making and a strip mill.
  • The Annual Dinner at which the Certificates of Completion were presented.

So the seminar was successful. As in previous years we shall publish summaries of all work presentations made here in the Monday Night Mail and on the website.
