Last week we held two TOTeMs at Akersloot. These were as follows:

  • TOTeM19 - Combustion Oscillations and Hum – 11th June 2002 chaired by Neil Fricker;
  • TOTeM20 - CFD for Combustion Engineering – 12th June 2002 chaired by Fred Breussin.

Both TOTeMs met their objectives in terms of determining the state-of-the-art of their topics. Two impressive series of invited lectures backed up with intensive discussion periods ensured that this first objective was well met.

An extensive poster session also allowed participants ample informal technical discussion backed up by less formal and less technical discussion at the TOTeM dinner. [Photograph – Johan Vanormelingen in discussion with Eric Vandenbulk (L) and Jim Kok (R)]

On each day the respective Chairmen succeeded, in discussion with the participants, to determine clear information on the knowledge to be acquired in the future, both in terms of Handbook material and research needs. They are to be congratulated on this achievement.

Stanley Santos accepted the task of recording the TOTeMs. Invited Presentations, Poster presentations, discussions and conclusions from TOTeMs 19 and 20 will be published in the “Combustion Trends for the Future”. Meanwhile, the results of previous TOTeMs can be browsed at: http://www.trends.ifrf.net/totems.html.

Thus it may be concluded that the TOTeMs were successful, and certainly that was the general reaction from the participants.

We also took the opportunity to hold a number of associated meetings, the results of which we will be publishing in the coming editions of the MNM. Watch this space.
